iSchool
recognises that most schools in Zambia (and Africa generally) don't
have the computers or other resources necessary to deliver eLearning.
So as well as providing the actually learning content and lesson plans
iSchool can provide a complete 'package' solution. This 'iSchool in a
box' comprises:
- Enough
computers to share between children in the right ratio for
children to be able to fully utilise the iSchool content (noting that
these are modern, low-power netbook computers especially built for
schools that will last all day without being plugged in, and can be
easily carried between classrooms so that the students can use them on
their desks). No computer lab or additional building is
needed. The computers are configured on a basis where they
will specifically deliver the learning content and cannot be
'misconfigured' by students, making them low-maintenance. Students will
use them every other lesson.
- Laptops
for teachers and head teacher use
- Trolleys
for secure storage and charging of laptops
- Projectors
and loudspeakers for classroom use
- A Printer with initial consumables
- Assistance
with setting up a facility
where the school's local community can make use of the computer,
internet, and learning facilities and also generate some income to
cover costs.
- Internet
connectivity and school-wide wireless network
- A
small solid-state server
to contain the content, and other learning material
- Uninteruptible
power supply (to last a full school day)
- Electricity
supply if needed (solar / cell combination)
- Teacher
training (concentrating on interactive enquiry-based learnig) and ongoing
mentoring and support
- Technical
installation and ongoing
support
- Access
to iSchool’s eLearning content
- Additional
physical resource material to fit in with the TLE
- Assistance
with setting up a facility
where the school's local community can make use of the computer,
internet, and learning facilities and also generate some income to
cover costs.
